Obamas jobbtal till nationen
Jag måste påpeka att det är en helt annan upplevelse att sitta på andra sidan Atlanten och se Obama tala live än göra motsvarande hemma i Sverige. Jag tycker USA är ett fantastiskt land och får lite gåshud när Obama, som för övrigt är en av mina absoluta favorittalare, dundrar ut budskap som får hela kongressen att resa sig. Han levererade återigen ett riktigt, riktigt vasst tal som än en gång bekräftar hans otroliga retoriska förmåga. Även om man är republikan måste det kännas svårt att inte slås över hur kan manövrerar tonläge, tempo och slagord.
Obama berörde punkter som är djupt rotade i amerikanska grundvalar: individuell ansvarplikt, ansvar för varandra, frihet och yttrandefrihet, rätten till en utbildning och - givetvis - framtidstro. Han underströk också att taxeringen måste vara rättvis och syftar indirekt på att höja skatterna för de rika. Obama-administrationens nya jobbprogram innehåller en rad nya åtgärder som ska ge sysselsättningen snålskjuts på kort sikt. Jag hoppas verkligen att det här programmet kan få ekonomin att accelerera - det behöver både världen och USA.
Efteranalys på TV-kanalen CNBC. Många av USA:s TV-kanaler har väldigt djuplodade analyser, något som saknas helt i Sverige.
Ingen tvekan om att Obama är en stor talare. Dessvärre tror jag inte på det här paketet. Det leder till ännu större skuldsättning med marginell effekt på sysselsättningen. USA's statsskuld måste ner med besparingar och skattehöjningar. Precis som i sydeuropa.
Please clarify - there are no analyses on Swedish TV of political speeches AT ALL? (That's surprising to me). Or just no analyses of American speeches (That would not be surprising)?
You may not have noticed this (because you don't recognize the faces of the Congressmen and women), but most of the time the Democrats were cheering and the Republicans were sitting on their hands. When the Republicans stood up to cheer, the Democrats didn't. This is our deadlocked political system. Right now it is not in the Republicans' political interest to do a damn thing - if unemployment remains high they believe that people will vote Obama out of office. Of course, Obama will try to point the finger at the Republicans for being extremist and obstructionist. So there was quite a lot of political theater to what you saw last night. From both sides.
I personally believe the last Republican administration drove this country into a ditch, but unfortunately the attention span of most Americans is too short to remember that. People are impatient with Obama and though he inherited one hell of a mess many think he can somehow change things all by himself. He needs a supportive Congress, have he doesn't have it. Unfortunately he has made plenty of mistakes too....but that's a discussion for another time.
There are TV analyses but they are not as close as informative and deep as the American equivalents. CNN is a great example.
Yeah, I noticed that Democrats and Republicans did not raise together except for the final conclusion when Obama tried to unite the entire Congress. I am aware of the deadlock but the purpose of this entry was not to point out the differences between the two parties, rather the speech and Obama's effort to try to get economy back on its feet again. Even if Democrats and Republicans cannot co-operate, it was a fantastic speech and enjoyable to watch.
